A bit of history
1998 : Netscape announces that Communicator 4 codebase will be open source.
March 31st : Mozilla.org is created and non-proprietary code of Communicator is released.
Later, decision has been made to rewrite the code from scratch.
Since then, AOL has bought Netscape (march '99) and continued contributing to mozilla.org by financing engineering.
